“Finland chooses a new leader” by The Week Junior (Pt. II)
On the 2nd of April, Prime Minister Sanna Marin came 3rd in the nation’s general election, soon to be replaced by Petteri Orpo, head of the National Coalition Party.
Sanna Marin was elected during 2019 as Finland’s youngest leader at the age of 37. To lead the government, she formed a coalition with four other political parties, and during her time as leader, she did many things. Marin chose to focus on problems such as climate change, social equality, and improving the country’s social benefits system, along with a plan to end homelessness by 2027. She was praised on how she handled the coronavirus epidemic, as Finland had some of the lowest death rates, and recently, has offered Ukraine support of over $990 million. She also was in charge of the campaign for Finland to join NATO, and on March 30, Turkey was the last country to accept Finland into the alliance.
